TRC211: Olympic Tax

SYATILA BINTI CHE SARUJI Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia

Traditional assessments often result in fragmented subject coverage and increased lecturer workload, while failing to engage students in a meaningful way. Tax Olympics is an innovative one-day academic assessment carnival that simulates the spirit of the Olympic Games in an academic setting, using the subject of Taxation as a thematic focus. This integrated event combines various topics from the syllabus into a cohesive experience that promotes active, student-centered learning. Students rotate through interactive, tax-related task stations featuring real-world challenges such as tax simulations, role-playing, digital form filling, tax knowledge quizzes, and tax planning. Each station includes clear rubrics and authentic assessments, with lecturers conducting real-time, on-the-spot evaluations. Evidence such as photos, videos, and direct observations is collected to support stronger reporting of learning and teaching outcomes. This innovation not only reduces the assessment burden on educators but also enhances students' soft skills including critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration in a fun and engaging environment. Tax Olympics presents a holistic, practical approach to academic assessment that aligns with 21st-century educational goals in Malaysia and better prepares students for the realities of the working world.
