Gear Up: Innovating ESL Writing Instruction through Web-based Learning
Asynchronous platforms are used to ensure learners can access knowledge at their convenience, anytime and anywhere. Through web-based learning (WBL), students can access resources at any time and from any location, making learning more accessible and tailored to individual needs. It is an innovative approach to education, offering learners increased autonomy, flexibility, and control over their learning journey. This study aimed to design, develop, and evaluate a web-based writing module known as Gear Up to enhance ESL undergraduates’ writing skills for the MUET-CEFR writing paper. This study employed DDR Type 1, which included multiple data collection techniques. There were three phases of data collection: 1) needs analysis, 2) design and development, and 3) implementation and evaluation. The module integrates authentic writing tasks and guided practice, enabling self-paced, flexible, and personalised learning beyond the classroom. Its novelty lies in the combination of MUET-specific tasks and multimodal learning resources to address individual learner needs effectively. The intended benefits include improved writing proficiency, greater learner autonomy, and increased engagement in writing practice. For educators, it offers an accessible tool for monitoring progress and customising instruction. On a societal level, enhancing graduates’ English proficiency supports employability and global competitiveness. With its scalable design and adaptability, the module holds strong commercialisation potential for educational institutions, language training centres, and private learning platforms seeking cost-effective and impactful solutions to English language learning challenges.
