Mohd Akmal Bin Mohd Azmer Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia
As a rapidly growing higher education institution, Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) is dedicated to providing the best network facilities and high-speed internet connectivity to support teaching, learning, research, and administration across the campus. However, the increasing demand for uninterrupted and fast wireless access poses a significant challenge, i.e., sustaining the high energy consumption associated with operating a dense network of wireless access points (APs) throughout extended operational hours. This energy usage not only contributes to higher operational costs but also undermines the university’s commitment to sustainable practices and carbon footprint reduction. To address this, the proposed innovation integrates intelligent AP power state management based on real-time usage patterns, occupancy, and campus schedules. Through continuous monitoring and automated control, the system delivers measurable reductions in PoE-based power consumption without compromising wireless coverage or network security. The results show significant operational cost savings, lower environmental impact through reduced carbon footprint, enhanced network security by minimizing the number of active APs during off-hours, and a scalable model applicable to other campus facilities. The UPTM Green Campus Secure Wi-Fi Optimization system demonstrates how sustainable technology can be seamlessly combined with secure, high-performance PoE-powered wireless networks to set a new benchmark for green innovation in higher education environments.
