Abstract for Project

USB devices are liberally exploited in the office setting since they are useful regarding transferring data.
They are however major security threats like malware infection, unauthorized data transfers and lack of
monitoring facilities. Such problems may result in data compromises especially in company where there is
no proper control of USB. Therefore, this project focuses on resolving such issues by covering three main
aims preparative analysis and listing of the most common USB-related security risks of office usage,
designing and developing a USB activity tracking tool that should consist of real-time monitoring, alert
messages, and integrated malware scans, and the testing of a functional effect and usability of the desktop
environment of the end-user. System development was done utilizing Agile methodology principle, which
consists of collecting requirements by the interview. The implementation was performed with Python, where
USB detection libraries, file logging and a graphical user interface were adopted. The resulting solution can
detect the USB insertions, log down device details, scan malware, and inform the user about the suspicious
activities. The UAT results depict the positive feedback of the functionalities of the system and its usability
capability. This project shows that a USB monitoring tool could make end points more secure, and safeguard
office sensitive information.
