TRC139: Picture This! Inclusive Learning Storyboards

Phoon Hooi San Universiti Sains Malaysia

Abstract

This educational innovation utilizes the power of storyboarding as a narrative tool to enhance public and undergraduate students’ understanding of children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). The project addresses a critical gap in awareness and empathy by visually representing eight types of learning differences, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), language disorders, emotional and behavioural disorders, intellectual disabilities, and specific learning disorders such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. Each storyboard is thoughtfully designed to illustrate two essential components: the key characteristics of the condition and the child’s journey through assessment and support. Featuring relatable characters, contextual scenarios, and speech bubble dialogues, the storyboards translate complex concepts into accessible, emotionally engaging narratives.

This initiative promotes not only understanding but also social inclusion by encouraging empathy and reducing stigma toward SEN individuals. The storyboards serve as a valuable educational resource for preservice teachers and community members, offering realistic case portrayals that inspire inclusive attitudes. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), this project advocates for a more equitable and compassionate society.

Designed to be cost-effective and scalable, the materials are suitable for print and digital use, allowing widespread application in training, awareness campaigns, and classroom settings. With strong commercialisation potential, the storyboards can be expanded into training modules, e-learning content, or multilingual adaptations. Ultimately, this innovation redefines storyboarding as a transformative medium for inclusive education and social change.
